Differientiating between "I" and "me" is still tricky, though. Most of the time she gets it right but a lot of the time she doesn't. - -0/8-/2006 In reference to... Delia got up and went over to her gears toy and said "Show ya" and held up the spiral gear right in front of her nose and said "See, spiral." We've never talked about the gear being a spiral before, ever. We have about 5-10 of these moments a day. It's really crazy! Nama and Papa - -0/2-/2006 In reference to... Delia knows what a woodpecker is because we saw one walking home from Brianna's house a few days ago. It wasn't the same kind in these pictures, it was just black and white speckled with a bit of red on its head. It was hopping around to different trees very close to us so we got a good look at it for a long time. We were cracking each other up "pecking" like a woodpecker. Nama - -0/9-/2005 In reference to... We love reading about how much you enjoy that precious little girl---and how much she enjoys her mommy and daddy. What a wonderful childhood you are giving her. Dad - -0/9-/2005 In reference to... Delia said her first complete sentence today! It was: "Lucy farted." - -0/8-/2005 Hi. I'm at school and just wanted to say hello and comment on Delia's saying "honey" on the phone last night. She is developing so quickly. I can't wait to see you in September. I hope to talk to you tonight. Love, Ma Dad - -0/7-/2005 In reference to... Delia and I just watched the fireworks from our back porch. She kept saying "fireworks" and "boom" and "wow!" and calling out the colors of all of them. After she'd seen enough, she said "Bye bye... fireworks. Nurse." I carried her upstairs to Emily but she spotted the fireworks from the window at the top of the stairs and said "more fireworks" so we watched for a little while longer until she said "bye bye fireworks" again. I just can't even describe how neat it was. Dad - -0/6-/2005 In reference to... I forgot to mention that Delia is learning numbers now! Just now she saw a block with the number 4 on it and she said "four" and held up four fingers! Dad - -0/6-/2005 In reference to... Delia got a Bob The Builder doll yesterday and she really loves it. This morning when she got up, she walked over and handed Bob to me. I picked her up and while I was holding her, she surprised me by pointing to Bob's wrench and saying "wench" and then Bob's hammer and saying "ham-moor". Just now she tried to feed Bob a Cheerio. Grma and Grpa Q - -0/6-/2005 In reference to... What a charmer---and what a wonderful record of her early words (and there are so many of them)! Grandpa's favorite, of course, is Papa, but his response to the whole video echoes Delia: "Wow!" - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... Great photos thanks to Joe's mania for the cameras...we all know that the latest is the tip of the proverbial iceberg. It is always bittersweet to gather, then scatter...Joe and I enjoyed our day in lower Manhattan and then in Brooklyn, especially canoeing on the Gowanus canal...I've seen prettier water but the view of the cities was magnificent. Delia was delightful in all respects and we so appreciate your taking time to visit with a toddler. You are a trooper too Emily. Love, Ma Grma and Grpa Q - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... Delia in the Big Apple! Nothing seems to faze her---she maneuvers equally well on the streets of the big city as in the woods of northern Minnesota! What a wonderful family reunion/celebration you all must have had. We're so glad it worked out so well. Dad - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... Emily forgot the link to the pictures. (And Dad says the gray hair is from thinking about your truck)... Dad - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... I have to expand on the cart story. The amazing thing was how she could turn and also how she could correct it when she was heading toward the shelves. She crashed a few times when she got distracted, but for the most part she really got it and was able to do what you're supposed to do with a cart! - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... Rhonda, John and the next two generations...what great photos and joy therein. I can not ask for better children, in-laws, out-laws and grand children. Delia is such a wonderful girl and I am amazed by all her antics and intelligence. The fruit doesn't fall very far from the tree! Have fun and let me know all the details. Love, Bev Gma Rhonda - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... What a special weekend we had---and Delia was better than a perfect angel. She is all personality and expressions and fun and very smart! Do I ever miss her! On my camera there are pictures of her in Lake Superior on Friday night! (I'll try to figure out how to get them to you so you can add them to Delia's website). The frigid water temp didn't seem to phase her at all. She also--with help from her mom---"labeled" the sand with her name. I bet that's the first time the beach (a word Emily taught her to say) of Lake Superior had Delia written on it! Grma and Grpa Q - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... We just re-read the message and have a correction! It was RR spikes, not ties(!), that Ry collected. Grma and Grpa Q - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... We can't get over what a little girl she is---blue jeans and tennis shoes (with butterflies)! What a wonderful bunch of pictures. And what a wonderful comment about spending lots of time just watching her explore: "It was great!" It's the antithesis of "The Hurried Child," a disturbing book I once read. Gpa adds that after collecting wocks, next on her list might be railroad ties, Ry's collection of choice at a young age. - -0/5-/2005 In reference to... Well Bev just has to say that your pictures are so cute and you all are charming! To the max. Delia looks better on a bad hair day than most of us on our best. She is so cute and so are you. I'm listening to the zoo DVD while looking at the current pictures...strange, but I like the double input. Joe has put so much energy into making DVD's, thanks to your expertise. Love to all. Gr. R. - -0/4-/2005 In reference to... Is there any better sound on earth than a baby laughing?! Dad - -0/4-/2005 In reference to... Delia watched the movie of herself today and she did everything she did in the movie! It was adorable. Grandma Rhonda - -0/4-/2005 In reference to... What I so loved about our spring week with Delia was her ready giggle and her great curiosity about everything! Hair rubber bands weren't popular in her hair, but she loved sorting them into colors. Barrettes weren't her favorites either, but when she saw me put velcro rollers in my hair, she laughed and pointed to her head. I wound a roller into her hair and she wanted it to stay there! One morning her GreatGrandpa and I walked her over to Maple Park. After making it over the curb and onto the sidewalk, she stopped and repeated the whole process backwards! Satisfied that she could do that, she climbed the curb again and headed straight to the park. Ry and Emily have taught her many songs; my favorite is Little Bunny FooFoo (how does one spell FuFu?). Her favorite part of this is bopping the head of anyone within reach! When she went to the garage with me and Grandpa John, she spotted the John Deere lawn tractor and soon was climbing up on it herself, grabbing the steering wheel and steering, and finding all the levers to pull. The key ring is yellow and she loved grabbing that and saying yellow in her own cute pronunciation of the word! She is a smart and funny and precious little one! - -0/4-/2005 In reference to... I think Delia is very focused, yet you can start to see the zany side of her...we have movies of her working with the large legos and studying all the possibilities of fitting them together as well as fitting them on her fingers. One of the best examples of her zaniness is when she started jumping off the coffee table into our arms (not just Emily's) and then peed on the table. It was funny. I also like the way she tried on the lavender jacket at the Old Navy store and wanted to try on all the shoes. Joe and I also liked the way she moved around the house and didn't pick things up too much...she did notice that one of the floor boards in the eat-in kitchen wasn't right and tried to pry it up. I like the way she studies things with her eyes and then walks off... Dad - -0/4-/2005 In reference to... I have to talk more about Delia and the slide. The first time she went down it was sort of a surprise to all of us, and especially her. Emily caught her and when she turned around to look back up at me she had the most hilarious expression on her face. I'll never forget it. She looked TERRIFIED, but she also had a big smile. She was breathing really hard - almost gasping, but also giggling uncontrollably! She immediately pointed to the top of the slide and she started bouncing around to get Emily to put her up there again. When we started to walk back to the car, she kept trying to go back over to the slides. It was just amazing to watch her go down the slide by herself. She'd walk to the edge, sit down, and then scoot herself forward until she was sliding. One other thing - I took her for a walk the other day and she saw a handicap symbol on the ground. She pointed to it and said "G G G!" - -0/4-/2005 In reference to... Hi. I'm at school and wanted to say hello. I really miss my e-mail access at home, so maybe we can fix that tonight with your help. I haven't received any e-mail since you left. All is well here except you aren't around. Love, Ma Gma and Gpa Q - -0/2-/2005 In reference to... She IS so great! We're giggling and clapping with her! Gma and Gpa Q - -0/2-/2005 In reference to... Gpa John thinks she puts her hand in her mouth when you say pink because she knows her tongue and gums are pink! Isn't it just amazing--and exciting--to witness every new thing she learns?! We can't wait to see her---and you guys, too. (: - -0/2-/2005 In reference to... I hope to talk to you tonight to confirm your March flight. I'm going to take 3/18 as a personal day because Barb and Paul, Morgan and Jon, Ursula and Morgan will be in FL for the 90th birthday of Paul's mother...party in Sun City on the 19th. I can't wait to see you again. Gma and Gpa Q - -0/2-/2005 In reference to... We love to see her sense of humor! When she says the cow says "Baa" near the end of the video, she makes herself laugh, as well as both of you! What a sweetheart. Gma and Gpa Q - -0/2-/2005 In reference to... She is such little hoot! Reading about everything she does makes us laugh! - -0/1-/2005 In reference to... Ooooh. Not fun. I've kind of forgotten the details of G/I distress. Hope you don't catch it from her. We're are sending your Christmas things today. We're going to the airport post office. Gma and Gpa Q - -0/1-/2005 In reference to... We feel sad for all of you. It's such a helpless feeling, isn't it? We're hoping it's a 24 hr. bug---or maybe just the 16 hr. variety--and little Delia is back up and giggly by now! Gma Rhonda - -0/1-/2005 In reference to... I echo everything Grandma Bev said; dueling reports may mean twice as many! She IS amazing to watch! We even noticed the difference between Thanksgiving and Christmas. Her understanding of words and sentences has increased amazingly, and so has her own special cuteness. We love her many faces and movements and patient attempts to do things. AND--we love her kisses, even when John was the recipient and I wasn't! You are all so blessed. - -0/1-/2005 In reference to... I'm glad you're in competition for the "best darn Delia report" because we get more to enjoy. My favorite Delia story is watching you two parent and enjoy her rapid development. The "lone ranger" sequence is too wonderful and again, I must say thank-you for your technical expertise. Ryan, you're as cute as Delia and I love your smile. I think you're all in for a great ride for the next 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70+ years! Have fun and stay cozy. - -0/1-/2005 In reference to... Well, you've done it again. What a marvelous movie blending the past and the present. Ryan, you are the cutest little boy and Delia is the cutest little girl. Ride 'em, cowpeople! Aunt Sara - -0/1-/2005 In reference to... There is no ONE cute story about Delia, even when fighting her Dad to get that diaper cover on, she is STILL soooooooo cute and funny! I love her "fishface" and her sign language! The only thing that would make her cuter would be for her to be a Tampa resident :) I can't wait to see her in March and by that time I'm hoping Natalie's over her jealousy. Isabel just wants to (try) to pick her up and be her big cousin. If I didn't want to play "mom" to Delia, that's all Natalie would want too. We LOVE you Delia!!!! Greta - -0/1-/2005 In reference to... Now that's a cute baby, and so cooperative about being a fashion model for the camera! - -1/2-/2004 In reference to... Penny Hill - -1/2-/2004 In reference to... Hey you guys! I just looked at the "best of" photo collection. What a great thing to do! The thing I liked best about it was the joy on so many faces while holding or looking at Delia. That little girl is so lucky. What a great family you are. Hugs, "Auntie" Penny - -1/1-/2004 In reference to... I just found a site called Nordlys northern lights and there's a photo contest of northern lights photographed in various parts of the world. You should submit a photo to the contest...I like the one with the Ely water tower. Gma and Gpa Q - -1/1-/2004 In reference to... Gpa says Delia needs to be disciplined---she's just too darn happy! And he also says he loves the shoes--the pink ones and the gray ones both! What great memories come back from last weekend when I look at these pictures. I'd love to be cuddling her on my lap right now and reading to her and having her re-position my glasses. (-: Grandma Rhonda - -1/0-/2004 In reference to... Love, Pam Smith Da Da - -1/0-/2004 In reference to... I just got up with her and we're in the office together. She went over to my tapes, grabbed one, and opened the case! Great pictures and colors...I liked the "I can't read" excuse. What a beautiful family you are. - -0/9-/2004 I feel like a blabbermouth but I can't help commenting on the cuteness of Delia and her parents. I know you all ate some "natural" stuff but I don't remember "rocks" as a rule. I'm just glad that you're there for Delia and cognizant of every detail. You will be proud of your parenting in the future and your journaling of her development (as well as yours, which is called, trial by fire!) Love, Ma - -0/9-/2004 Well, I just love the way you're documenting all the details... when she asks you later--when did I do so and so, you'll have it all recorded. Kind of like the lupins bit on Monty Python. That bouncy bouncy is really a science lesson...the resilience of some substances as compared to others or how to keep your balance when there's a bit of uncertainty. I love you and miss you...don't wish you were here for the hurricane called Frances. Or any other. The Weather Channel reported warm temperatures in Northern MN. True? Stay cool. We love the look on her face when she squats down and stands back up - such a look of accomplishment and surprise and sort of an "Isn't this just the most fun?" And we agree with everything you said about her at the end of the D.Report. Spending time with her two weeks ago was just magical as we saw new little things happening every day and always with that gleeful little smile on her face. We are all very blessed with this child. Love, Gma and Gpa Q Bev Hanlon - -0/8-/2004 I just watched Delia feeds the animals (while on the potty) and it's too good...what a gentle kingdom you've created...Coby seems all comfortable with Foley and Delia and so gentle with the food scamming. Love, Ma Bev Hanlon - -0/8-/2004 In reference to... joe hanlon - -0/8-/2004 In reference to... Hurricane Charley August 13, 2004 Tampa Bay Tampa’s hurricane season starts officially on June 1. Every summer we nervously watch the TV for those funny shapes forming out in the Atlantic or the Gulf, wondering where they'll go. The old-timers have been through the exercise lots of times. And it doesn't take long for the newcomers to find out how bad a hurricane can be. Andrew blew through Miami and Homestead in ‘93, and we’ve all seen the news clips of the other bad Gulf Coast storms in New Orleans, etc. Outsiders may ask why people live here along the coast in the face of disaster. But remember that every region has its own bad weather problems, or wildfires or earthquakes or what ever. Sunny Florida has to dodge hurricanes. Well-- Friday, August 13, 2004, was a close one for Tampa. By noon on Friday Bev and I holed up at the Jerry Ulm Dodge dealership because of the order for mandatory evacuation from our house in a flood-prone, low-lying neighborhood. They announced the mandatory evacuation yesterday, and we went to bed knowing tomorrow we’d leave our home, it would probably be flooded with several feet of water over the floor, and we’d come home to a hell of a mess. Of course, for several days before Friday, The Weather Channel and the local TV weather people broadcast nonstop information about all the various aspects of this significant emergency. We watched the eye of the storm go over Cuba. And then we began making plans for a real evacuation -- what will we take, what will we lift to the second floor, what will we leave downstairs -- and probably lose -- and all those sorts of consequential problems. At some point we actually accepted that our house might flood, a possibility I’d always denied before. Thursday night we moved my motorcycle to a downtown parking garage. Friday morning we got up fairly early to begin cleaning up the back porch, taking some Oriental rugs upstairs, looking around at floor level on the first floor family room and living room -- thinking about that 1 to 2 ft. of water covering our floor! Sara's new house is even lower than ours! I think it actually flooded fairly recently. Speaking broadly, we've been lucky in Tampa about destructive hurricanes. Once in 1985 Bev and I took the girls to high ground in east county at Mango because of an evacuation order. Nothing happened that time as Elena circled innocently in the Gulf. All those local threats and distant disasters taught us the detailed recipe for the catastrophe of a ‘worst case’ scenario: The big one for Tampa involves the eye of a Gulf hurricane moving north east through the mouth of the Tampa Bay over the Sunshine Skyway Bridge and right up the channel toward downtown. That path pushes water toward downtown for a big storm surge there. At a high tide, with lots of hurricane-produced rain, that scenario puts parts of downtown under 20 feet of water plus lots of broken glass and structural damage due to the 150 mph winds! Charley definitely posed that threat. Thursday AM TV showed the computer- projected path toward Tampa. On Thursday most of us were resigned to the unimaginable – our houses flooded, and downtown underwater! The emergency officials announced the mandatory evacuation order in early afternoon for lots of people in Tampa and Pinellas county. We went to bed Thursday night wondering how to prepare for this inevitable disaster. We got up Friday morning and started to work out our adjustment to the pending disaster. After lots of tinkering around on the downstairs level, and out in the backyard, and finding the main breaker switch (outside, by the meter box, despite the label in the panel saying ‘main breaker’), and loading the car with the essentials for an overnight, we finally left at about 1130am. The Evacuation Order specified six A. M.! High tides were set for around noon and midnight. We followed Sara gratefully to the Ulm Dodge auto dealership on high ground several miles north of our house. It seemed comfortable, and we settled in watching TV as we waited, hearing that landfall for the eye of the big storm was set for 8pm within 50 miles of Tampa. I got wet in the first ‘bands’ of the thunder showers outside at about one o'clock. Even though we were on high ground out of the flood risk, Jerry worried about wind damage to his auto inventory of 500 cars parked tightly around the building we hunkered down in… and who can forget those film shots of the high winds peeling off the roofs of modern big buildings! So we tended to silently pray and hope for the best. Sometime between two and three Charley changed course! This change in the course was bad for Port Charlotte and Ft Myers south of Tampa, but a blessed reprieve for Tampa Bay! We all breathed a sigh of relief as we realized we were only in for the usual summer drenching rains and lots of gusty wind at 40 to 50 mph. As we realized we’d barely escaped the brunt of the disaster, Scott’s brother Jerry fired up his grill outside under an overhang to cook hot dogs, burgers, and chicken for the 20+ people who’d sought refuge at the auto dealership. In a sense it was a hurricane party as our family had brought snacks etc to wait out several days of no power and no return home, driving there Friday morning through Tampa’s deserted streets. By 4 pm as we started to believe we were out of danger, our granddaughters, Isabel and Natalie went outside to play in the drizzling rain and the constant flow from a downspout near Jerry’s grill. Inside watching TV we worried about those in the new path of Charley’s changed course, commenting on the irony of those who left Tampa seeking safety in Orlando and Lakeland. Now it was headed there! At 3.30pm the sky was barely gray and the air was calm. Charley made landfall north of Fort Myers, so I'm sure it's a hell of a mess down there. I feel sorry for those people. I feel blessed for our safe Tampa! Mostly written Friday afternoon by Joe Hanlon - -0/7-/2004 In reference to... Great bunch of images and stories. It's Friday and I wanted a dose of Delia's and Emily's laughter, so that's what I've been listening to at the end of a beautiful, busy week. I really enjoy watching Em react and hearing Ryan in the background enjoying Delia's amazing laughter. Why is laughter so compelling? It's better than crying any day. I love you all and wish you a wonderful weekend and a lot of alliteration. Did I mention that I ran up on stage to sing with a local children's song guru (Jack Hartmann) along with a lot of other teachers in order to complete the folly that is called "education"? Seriously, I danced a mean ABC disco and didn't care if I were un-coordinated. Actually, by playing Jack's CDs daily, I'm okay with the rhythm thing. P.S. Will the movie wear out by repeated playings? Probably not. - -0/4-/2004 In reference to... Well, it's a hard act to follow, but I think you've captured something so precious and wonderful that I salute you all. I like the way Emily responds to the laughter as much as Delia's chortles or guffaws or whatever you call that merriment. When you look at the first movies of Delia's smiles and now the laughter...it's really something to think about. Human development...can't live with it...can't live without it. I love you and will enjoy the movies often. I love the new computer. I love you. Love, Ma - -0/3-/2004 In reference to... I can't believe it's over...back to school and the zoo (literally) today. Not just of beautiful Delia, but also of Emily, Ryan, Aunt Rhonda, Uncle John and the dogs and cats. Aunt Sara - -1/1-/2003 whoever DOES'NT think Delia is the cutest baby right now better think again.:) Our Dad is funny too and it's lucky Delia won't have any competition from her cousins Isabel and Natalie although we will truly miss seeing Delia at this age. Aunt Sara - -1/1-/2003 I HAVE to see Delia and hold her or I will scream! Thanks for posting all the wonderful photos,it takes the edge off. She sounds like she is so contented and that is such a comforting feeling for new parents. You guys are doing a great job and sound like you are having a great time! Enjoy, enjoy, enjoy! Christine Hanlon Jirak - -1/1-/2003 In reference to... Good Morning Party of three! Sounds like you guys are figuring it out. The beautiful thing is there is no right or wrong. You write the rules for your own family. Look, listen, absorb and then apply it to you and yours in your own way! Life, it's pretty cool. From what I remember, the first three months of a baby's life are totally unpredictable due to the nervous system still developing and everything else trying to get in sync with being in the outside world. Just sleep when you can, it gives you strength and patience! (with yourself and the baby!) It was really great visiting with your Dad last weekend, can't wait 'till Thanksgiving. You know that we have to see Delia! You too of coarse! Please send some pictures this way, I have only seen the birth announcement one. Lot's of love to you guys, Chris - -1/0-/2003 In reference to... what a delicious looking child...so molded and beautiful...I loved the announcement and I didn't think it was impersonal at all...just pretty and timely. You guys are the best. Have fun this weekend. I just got home from the non-stop day...school, after-school re-arranging of furniture with the help of a neat guy from Plant and (HPPC) and then a little baby sitting at S& S's. Joyce gave me permission to leave because I really hadn't had a break, so I said, "Okay!". Have a great weekend...kiss the baby for me. Aunt Sara - -1/0-/2003 In reference to... All is well here...Happy Halloween. Love, Ma - -1/0-/2003 In reference to... Dear Em and Ry, I think the reason that two adults come in so handy for child-rearing is because of what you're feeling after 8 days. Take turns...that's the beauty of your situation. It looks like you are! I can't wait to see this new family of yours! Aunt Ellie - -1/0-/2003 Hello, Emmy, you look so beautiful with your baby! Ry, you look very handsome also (we need more pics of you with the babe). There has been no mention of how the animals and Delia are getting along but the pictures show they have been quite close to each other! Are they scared when she cries? Emily's new baby Delia In light of Emily’s professed wish to return-to-nature and live ‘off the grid’, I'm surprised that she's encouraging Delia’s use of makeup at such a young age. Even though the shade of lipstick is perfect for Delia and the eyeshadow is very complimentary, as Delia's grandfather I think it's important to speak out against encouraging these precocious trends in such young girls. Don't you think Delia would look just fine without any lipstick at all? And in some of those photos with the blue background in the yellow receiving blanket, her eyebrows are so perfectly formed that it's almost unfair to all other newborns. Certainly this plucking has to stop! Is waxing next? Delia is already so pretty and the details of her face are so exquisite that it's a shame her parents let her use this makeup now at all. What's the world coming to? And here's another point too. All that sneezing shows me that she's allergic to Canadian pollen. I suggest she relocate closer to Tampa, Florida as soon as possible to see if that would help. As the all- knowing, wise grandfather with some experience with little girls, I suggest that they ---- just add milk! Love, grandpa Joe - -1/0-/2003 In reference to...
